This 18-month project was the latest phase of a renovation project started in 2007. Anything but ordinary, this outdoor living space is filled with customized details at every level. Select thermal bluestone laid in a running bond pattern sets a consistent and edited tone for this minimalist design. Wide steps connect lounge areas bordered with honed finished Indiana limestone that extends into vertical elements like retaining walls. Centering one gathering area is a custom granite fire table including a flame burner with enough BTUs to heat a house, fabricated by Coldspring USA. Integrated into the terrace are two low columns engineered and built on helical piers. They house high-voltage niche lights to illuminate walkways and recessed low-voltage strip lighting to highlight a pair of Dune planters. The organic tapered sides of the planters soften the strong lines of the hardscape while complementing the stunning silhouettes of the agave plants they display.

Near the residence, a wall-mounted waterfall serves as a dazzling focal point with its smooth flow of water illuminated by customizable integrated lighting. Below, the gunite jacuzzi spa features handmade glass tiles that add unique detail to this functional element. Surrounding the terrace, sweeping masses of ornamental grasses, flowers and bushes deliver a symphony for the senses. Beyond sweeping masses of ornamental grasses, flowers, and shrubs, a custom mahogany screen serves as a visual and physical boundary to preserve privacy while echoing the horizontal lines of the furniture. * This project was featured on the 2008 Detroit Home Garden Tour.
