This 2022 project further enhances a rolling lake estate on Lake Angelus featuring a New Nantucket-style home. With its storybook feel, this property demanded a landscape that could support and highlight its unique character without being overdone. Careful consideration was given to maximize views of the lake, maintain privacy from neighbors, and preserve stands of mature trees. Consistent use of Connecticut stone in walls, columns, and other details extends the architecture into the garden and ensures a cohesive feel. Layers of plantings soften the hardscape and integrate the house into the land. A pair of stone piers welcomes guests, and a meandering drive allows time to appreciate the stunning façade. The curved wall is a nod to the classic architectural lines. In the back, the landscape steps from the house towards the lake via a series of terraces. All walls are kept orthogonal to maintain the formal language of the rear façade. The upper terrace is spacious, versatile, and features ample room for entertainment. The lower terrace integrates comfortably into the lawn’s gentle slope and features a plunge pool with a built-in spa. Significant design consideration was put into the pool’s structural components including extensive helical piers, grade beam footings, poured walls, and drainage systems resulting in beautiful finished work. By the lake, a firepit terrace and lake house offer a private waterside retreat surrounded by more casual plantings.
