The dramatic topography and natural character of a woodsy site inspired the design of this 2022 project in West Bloomfield Township. Using parallel lines of corten steel slicing gracefully through the topography interwoven with an angular retain wall that reiterates the lines and forms of the residence in the landscape. In the front of the house, a series of offset steps climbs playfully up the face of a planted knoll.

Corten steel risers bring dynamic colors and textures to the smooth concrete slabs while echoing the materials of the home’s façade. This interactive element allows guests to experience first-hand the changing grade of the site. From the top of the knoll, a bridge leads to the entrance. Underneath the bridge lies a simple lawn bordered by thin corten steel retaining walls and a line of steppers that subtly draws the eye without taking attention from the house.
A back deck of sustainably harvested Ipe wood offers an intimate space for dining and entertaining immersed in the natural beauty of the trees. Anchoring the edges are several massive 8-ton mossy boulders that seem to grow organically from the ground to embrace the deck. These rugged focal points add a grand sense of scale and gravitas to the space. Throughout the landscape, a native-oriented plant palette further stitches the hardscape to the earthy surroundings. Ferns, sedges, native grasses, and forbs delight the senses year-round and soften the bold architectural details.
