This 2021 project in Bloomfield Township grows organically from the existing house and incorporates a new stepped lakeside pool terrace perfect for outdoor living. The long narrow pool is oriented parallel to the main axis of the house, and the disciplined orthogonal lines of the hardscape follow suit, spatially anchoring landscape to architecture. Clean-cut stepper pathways with green joints allow access to all garden spaces while concrete steps slip between oversize planting beds and traverse the steep transition in grade. At the lowest level, the intimate pool terrace sits comfortably nestled between house and lake. An array of plantings of varying scales ensure that the garden can be enjoyed up close but also when viewing from afar.

Areas for relaxation pepper the terrace including a fire table conversation space and private lounges. Taking inspiration from the house, the materials are simple and authentic. Planting beds bordered with weathered cedar echo the house’s façade, and a glass rail subtly protects the pool without impacting dramatic views of the lake beyond.
Natural stone outcroppings integrate with the landscape to echo the natural textures and character of the surrounding woods and architectural veneer. The smooth concrete deck cantilevers the pool beam forming a seamless coping adding a sense of lightness and delicacy to the space. In the pool and spa, carefully selected tile finishes with complementary blue hues create a cool, cohesive look.
